20 Questions for Contractors

in

Whenever you’re contemplating a home improvement project — whether it’s remodeling a kitchen/bathroom, adding a deck, building a garage, painting your house, etc. — there are questions you should ask any potential contractor before you hire them to do the work.

You Should Ask These Questions Before the Work Begins

1. How long have you been in business?

2. What type of painting (or service) have you done in the past? Is it specific to what my job entails?

3. Can you show me your certificate of insurance? Do you have at least one million dollars in coverage?

4. Are you covered by Worker’s Compensation Insurance? (Ask to see it, paying specific attention to the policy period.)

5. Are you in good standing with the Better Business Bureau?

6. How many workers will be on my job?

7. How long will it take to complete my job?

8. How old are the employees? Are they all adults?

9. Do you require deposits prior to starting? (At Ohio Painting and Pressure Wash, we only want full payment at completion and satisfaction by the customer.)

10. Will there be vehicles at my property and how many? Where will they need to park?

11. Will we have to leave during the job or can we come and go?

12. Will there need to be any preparations required by us prior to the job?

13. Will there be any clean up required by us at the end of the job?

14. Do you offer a warranty? (Ask to see specifics and the number of years.)

15. Is the warranty pro-rated? (Ohio Painting and Pressure Wash’s warranty is non-pro-rated and transferable.)

16. Ask if the warranty has ever had to be used.

17. Who is the owner of the company? Is there a partner? Are you incorporated?

18. Is the company a franchise or is is privately owned?

19. Can you produce references for your company name dating back to the start of your company?

20. Are there any past or present lawsuits or judgments against your company?
