Can Gutters Be Painted?

A common concern for homeowners looking to paint their homes, particularly if a new color scheme is under consideration, is what to do about gutters and downspouts. Often, the idea of painting the gutters/downspouts seems implausible or impractical. However, painting gutters and downspouts is easily accomplished and makes implementing a new color scheme all the more doable.

If the gutters are relatively new and in good condition, painting is the less expensive option. Painting contractors can include painting gutters in their estimates when a whole house painting project is undertaken. Painting a gutter provides greater protection to the gutter and extends it life. In instances where gutters and downspouts are old and damaged, it’s more cost-effective to have them replaced.

Acrylic latex paint formulated for exteriors can be used for aluminum, vinyl, and steel gutters. Exterior acrylic paints typically include rust-inhibiting ingredients which work well for steel gutters. Galvanized steel gutters, on the other hand, do not need to be painted if the factory-applied galvanized surface is intact.

Can Gutters be Painted with a Roller?

Yes, a roller can be used to paint gutters although a brush will be required to reach areas not easily accessible to be being rolled.

Do Gutters Need to be Removed from House Before Painting?

Removing gutters prior to painting is an option, but it’s not necessary or required. In some instances, where access to the gutter is limited, removing the gutters can make painting them easier to paint. However, in most cases, gutters and downspouts can be painted in place as the rest of the house is painted.

What Color Should a Gutter be Painted?

If the desire is for the gutters to blend in and be less noticeable in the paint scheme, the gutters should be painted the same color as the exterior of the house. If the desire is for the gutters and downspouts to contrast with the exterior color of the house, matching the gutter color to the color of the roof is recommended.
