Does Paint Quality Matter?

Professional painters and painting contractors know there’s a direct correlation between the price and quality of the paint used in a project and its finish and longevity. In other words, using less expensive (cheaper) paint will save money up front, but is more likely to fail in a shorter period of time.

What Makes a Paint High-Quality?

In essence, high-quality paint is manufactured using the highest quality ingredients to create a longer-lasting, better-looking finish. Here are four of the ingredients used to manufacture paint with a brief description/discussion about how they effect paint quality:

Pigments
Pigments are the substances that give paint its color. Higher quality (expensive) paints use purer pigments in higher quantities or proportion in the paint formula. Lower quality (cheap) paints use pigments that are less pure combined with pigment fillers or extenders. The quality of the pigments used in paint will effect the paint’s performance in four areas of concern: hide, durability, fading, and the gloss/sheen of the surface.

Binders
Binders are the substances used to hold pigments together. Latex paints use acrylic binders; oil-based paints typically use linseed oil, soya oil, or other oils called alkyds. The quality and proportion of the binder used in a paint formula directly bears on stain resistance, gloss, adhesion, and resistance to cracking of the paint. The use of higher-quality binders means the paint will better adhere to surfaces, provide enhanced film integrity and greater durability.

Liquids
Liquids are used to effect the viscosity of the paint. Higher-quality paints have a greater ratio of solids (pigment and binders) to liquids, while lower-quality paints have a greater ratio of liquids to solids.

Additives
Additives are substances/chemicals that extend a paint’s performance and/or benefits. Common additives include antimicrobial chemicals, preservatives, dispersing agents for even pigment distribution, and modifiers that create better opacity and leveling of the finished surface.

Low-Quality, Cheap Paint is More Expensive Longterm

Higher quality paints save money by providing greater durability and longevity. Lesser quality paints are more likely to fail in a shorter time span requiring repainting more frequently. Higher quality paints provide better coverage with fewer coats and greater color retention. Making a greater up-front investment in a quality paint insures the finished surface will last for years.
